New ArcGIS Server Web Mapping application white paper

In July ESRI has released a new white paper for ArcGIS Server from it's "ArcGIS Server in Practice" series. This one discusses setup and performance of web application for a medium size local government/municipal site. By medium size they consider about 300,00 population and about 200km2.

Application is fairly simple with common tasks like geocoding an address, finding parcels, basic selections and identify of features.

Document also discusses required dataset for this use case and how to structure the map document used for map service and other required map services. Each of map services is described in detail with reasons for choosing selected options (e.g. why PNG8 was choosen over PNG32).

Really nice thing to see is the geoprocessing model used for selecting surrounding parcels.

Appendix D has all details about the model including the Python code if it would be exported.

An alternative to this approach is use of geometry service and it is also discussed in this white paper. It is also documented in Appendix E.

In short, this is a worthwhile reading if you want to implement similar web application. It covers all aspects of the process - requirements, design, data, processes, development and testing.

The document can be downloaded from ESRI site here.

ESRI UC 2009 Day 2 update

Day two at the User Conference seems to be quiet or there aren’t many updates yet. A friend of mine, Jithen Singh,  already did a hard work of compiling a list of news for upcoming version of ArcGIS 9.4.
Here are some highlights for Desktop:
  • Extension of layer packages to include tools, models, globes and diagrams
  • Improved Table Of Content – allows rendering of cartographic representations
  • Add models into toolbar
  • Multiple page PDF export
  • Support for Windows 7
  • Run geoprocessing in the background
For full list of changes for Desktop, Server and Mobile go to Mandown.

ESRI 2009 User Conference starts tomorrow

Tomorrow is the start of User Conference for 2009. As expected there is an official page providing lot of information like featured sessions, on-line agenda, accommodation and other.

image

Collection of quick links include Facebook, Twitter and Flickr pages. As alternative you can simply subscribe to RSS feeds from this page.

If you haven’t been at the Conference you know it is really busy and spread across very large area. To help you find your way use UC Route Finder. This will show distance and time required to get to the destination and it is also viewable in 3D.

image

Very soon we are expecting a flood of news from the Conference. I am hoping that ArcGIS Explorer 900 will be released within next few days. AGX blog has plenty of information and photos from specialist events where it will be demonstrated (homeland security, education, etc).

It will be quite hard to keep up with all news but hopefully in next week or two I’ll be able to pick out most interesting news and videos.

ArcGIS 9.3 SP 1 released and other updates

ESRI has released Service Pack 1 for ArcGIS 9.3 earlier this month. Service pack is available for download from ESRI’s support site download section. The service pack was announced earlier (see posts ArcGIS 9.3 SP1 fixes, Part 1 and ArcGIS 9.3 SP1 fixes, Part 2)  and more fixes are added to the list.

Even if you are not too interested in bug fixes you should consider downloading and installing it because it also introduces new functionality. New features are listed separately in a PDF document. The feature list includes:

  • Export to CAD is now ArcView license tool
  • Support for WFS 1.0 (1.1 is already supported at 9.3)
  • Improved visibility of scale bar for web applications
  • Support for Windows Mobile Smartphone’s
  • Full support for editing data in PostGres SQL
  • Progress indicator for map and globe caching

Scale bar visibility improvements

Unfortunately, there was a one part of code that was not included in SP 1. That is Topology validation patch and it is available as separate download.

ESRI has released Service Pack 1 for all other 9.3 products. So now SP1 is available for:

I would recommend you download these and check the new features list.

ArcGIS 9.3 SP1 fixes, Part 1

In previous post I mentioned that there is a huge list of fixes and changes for service pack 1.

Here are my picks of fixes and improvement scheduled for this SP.

In second part I'll choose ArcSDE, Image Server and ArcIMS fixes.

ArcGIS Desktop

  • NIM006247 - Saving shape file edits more than eight times in ArcMap leads to slower and slower performance.
  • NIM008317 - Inserted Excel spreadsheets, as an object in maps, display as black boxes when exported to PDF (xls and xlxs) on Office 2007 machines. EMF is fine.
  • NIM008646 - If the Geographic Transformation is not set when data from a personal geodatabase or SDE is initially added to ArcMap, setting the transformation at a later time through Data Frame Properties > Coordinate System tab > Transformations will not transform the data.
  • NIM012443 - The IDW interpolation tool in Spatial Analyst ignores the maximum distance settings in search radius settings.
  • NIM033727 - Converting symbology to representation with the 'Features in current extent' option chosen does not complete properly.
  • NIM034181 - Calculate Field tool causes application (ArcMap, ArcCatalog) to hang when working with large datasets and sequential calculations.
  • NIM034907 - A crash will occur if the Contour tool is used on a large, pre-93 file geodatabase.
  • NIM035106 - Application failure when using the SHAPE" field in the Select By Attributes command."
  • NIM035125 - New features created in checkout are not synchronized after adding globalid to parent replica.
  • NIM035317 - When you have a subtype defined for a field that is of type Short – the subtype description is not displayed in Get Unique Values lists found on dialogs\windows where the SQL Query Builder is used.
  • NIM035692 - Add support for third-party tiled Internet services into ArcGlobe.
  • NIM035876 - Using classified renderer on a large raster dataset will receive unexpected error message in ArcGIS 9.3 final.
  • NIM035931 - Connections to ArcSDE SQL Server Express geodatabases from ArcMap are not being closed successfully when a new map document is started without restarting ArcMap. This can cause SQL Server Express database detach operations to fail.
  • NIM036057 - Repeated conversions of labels to annotation with append mode can result in duplicate label classes being created when they shouldnot be created.
  • NIM036446 - Representation rules with identical internal identifiers can lead to data corruption.
  • NIM036799 - Performance of the Dissolve tool is poor when the data contains a lot of features that are not candidates to be dissolved.
  • NIM036816 - Contour tool fails with error 999999 and creates and empty feature class when output is written to a geodatabase.
  • NIM036971 - Exporting attributes to PDF results in incorrect values for fields using a number format.
  • NIM037274 - ArcSDE (for SQL Server Express) connections are not being released when a map document is closed but ArcMap remains open.
  • NIM037410 - Exporting attributes to PDF is not preserving alias names for fields.
  • NIM037580 - Crash due to lack of memory while building a spatial index for a complex polygon.
  • NIM037689 - Maplex street labeling is much slower than at ArcGIS 9.2 for some cases.
  • NIM037819 - When a model is invalid, then repaired and saved, the red X on the model does not go away.
  • NIM037888 - Exporting attributes to PDF drops the value of a field called NAME when layer is using unique value renderer.
  • NIM037960 - When setting transparencies in ArcGlobe, features in the background are displayed in the foreground.
  • NIM038064 - Crash from Style Manager caused by representation rules with custom geometric effects when opening representation Rules style gallery.
  • NIM038087 - When there is a drop down window in the SQL expression control, the expression typed into the control will be lost when the query builder dialog is launched.
  • NIM038157 - Update Data Interop to include all available Transformers in FME2008.
  • NIM038158 - Update FME engine to current FME2008 build 5208 or higher.
  • NIM038159 - Update Data Interop to include all available Formats in FME2008.

 ArcGIS Server

  • NIM013509 - ArcGIS Server ImageService WMS SVG output is not available.
  • NIM033991 - WMS identify shows original field names instead of alias.
  • NIM035825 - Unable to write to Blob field on mobile device.
  • NIM036507 - Publishing an image service (using publish wizard) does not write some properties to the config file.
  • NIM037827 - ArcGIS server at 9.3 supports WFS 1.1. Most 3rd party (non ESRI) WFS clients currently support WFS 1.0. ArcGIS Server 9.3 Service Pack 1 now supports the WFS 1.0 to assist with interoperability. The WFS 1.0 support is read only and does not support transactions.

 .Net Manager

  • NIM035620 - The HTML editor in the Layer Format editor does not work in Firefox 3.
  • NIM035634 - For web application settings, a previously entered IP address for host always displays a warning message.
  • NIM036583 - Remove hard-coded e-mail address from Login and PasswordRecovery pages.

ArcGIS 9.3 SP 1 announcement

ESRI Support site as announced Service Pack 1 for ArcGIS 9.3 It is not available yet and planned release is in November. Full list of current fixes is available here. Mind you, this list will be updated as required.

If you are concerned with increase in number of fixes I would say that is actually a good sign. One of new features in ArcGIS 9.3 is crash reporting feature. It is very much like the one in Microsoft Office. The reports generated from this tool are examined and provide an insight into problem areas.

Hopefully, next time when you are asked would you like to send the crash/error report say "Yes" and you will help ESRI to make better product.

In a few days time I'll compile a list of my favourite bug fixes for this service pack. Stay tuned.

GeoCart 2008 impressions

GeoCart 2008 has finished this week. It was second GeoCart I have attended. Even is smaller numbers than the last one it was a very good conference.

Organization

Firstly, the organization was very, very good. This is thank to great effort of Igor Drecki and other individuals that made great effort ensuring everything works flawlessly. I have not seen that anything went wrong or was out of schedule.

Programme

Programme was very interesting. Every day there were two parallel streams. The streams were:

  • Visual exploration
  • Spatial data and knowledge sharing
  • 3D visualisation
  • Spatial modeling and data mining
  • Social, human and egocentric studies
  • Spatial analysis

Authors, co-authors and presenters came from quite a few countries. The map below shows what these countries are (after all this was cartographic conference).

Presentation were interested and very well presented (in most cases). I have noticed something that kind of surprises me. There are highly educated experts and academics that are having hard time delivering the message to the audience. In some cases the visual presentation (slides) are making this even worse. On the other hand I've seen really crafted slides and exceptionally presented papers. Top three presentations (I didn't see all of them) were:

  • (Re)considering Geographical Information Communication in the Era of Web 2.0 by Professor William Carthwright
  • Comparing the Performance and Attitudes of Undergraduates and Adult Professionals in an Online Course in GIS&T by David DiBiase
  • Cloud-based Geospatial Data Processing by Robert Coup

Map exhibition

This time there were fewer maps and posters in the exhibition area but they were quite interesting. Exhibited posters were:

  • Adding Value to the National Geospatial Data Holdings: Bundles of data and manifestations of maps
  • Land Use Change for Cambridge and Surrounds, New Zealand: 1991-2006 – a raster comparison using the Map Comparison Kit
  • Mapping the Future: An integrated, multi-scale, spatial decision support system to support long-term community planning
  • Coordinated Visualization of Human Daily Activity Patterns with Ringmaps

For the end here are some photos from the conference.

ESRI international user conference 2008

ESRI UC is in the full swing and it is a big one, as usual. This time I am not there so I'll point to some other blogs and sources of information about it.

For start there is the ESRI's UC blog with plenty of information and screenshots, photos (where applicable).

Some of the highlights of the conference so far are:

  • Conference proceedings are available on-line
  • Top 10 usability tips in ArgGIS 9.3
  • 10. Bookmarks are now accessible at the top level menu to make visiting common places faster and easier. Additionally, the bookmark manager has been redesigned allowing you to rearrange the bookmarks in the order you want, and you can save and load your bookmarks to a file to share between map documents with other users.

    9. Pause labeling allows you to temporally suspend drawing of labels while you navigate about the map and perform other tasks. You can return to labeling with a single click of the button on the toolbar.

    8. Keyboard shortcuts allow you to step through time series data; for example, just hold the ALT key as you turn on a layer and it turns off the previous layer, or you can use the same functionality to switch to a completely different map and a different set of layers.

    7. Clipping a raster or an image to a graphic shape can be useful for defining a study area as a graphic shape-then use that shape to extract or clip a terrain model to your study area.

    6. Working with transparent legends in 9.3-transparency is often used to improve the cartography of the map, when the brightness of the map does not match the brightness legend-there is a new option in the dataframe properties to simulate the layer transparency for all legends.

    5. Regarding table sorting, aliases, and joins, there's a new sorting option which allows for the sorting of multiple columns. Table joins now have aliases persisted-you no longer have to recreate field aliases after you perform a join.

    4. On the Geocoding toolbar is a new option called the Address Inspector, which allows you to move your mouse and hold it down as you move around the map. It will automatically calculate the nearest address to that location and mark it and the address on the map. It also works for cross streets and intersections. For those who are using addresses and want to label addresses on a map, this process has been automated and streamlined.

    3. On the drawing tool bar, you can now take graphics and automatically convert them to features. You can choose which graphics you'd like to convert, and they will now be converted to a feature class with all the attributes and symbology intact. This means that you don't have to go out and create a feature class before adding feature-you can add graphics and convert them after the fact.

    2. Identify shortcuts and HTML popups by using the identify tool to change the color of a building footprint. For example, rather than searching the TOC for a particular layer, you can now select a feature on the layer, right-mouse click on the identify properties and get right to the layer symbology. HTML popups can be turned on for any layer, and they allow you to see the attribute information in a nicely formatted window-along with a leader line, which always updates to the map location. This can be used for custom content like Web pages as well.

    1. Quality is always a focus for ESRI but with 9.3 a new error reporting system has been implemented that allows users to send error reports directly and anonymously to the development team. The system also identifies where in the software a random crash occurred. ESRI has spent a lot of time reducing the number of crashes, but if you should encounter a crash, please send the report so we can continuously improve our software.

  • Discover what is WebGIS - WebGIS is a platform that can be used to connect all your GIS business systems and this framework allows you to consume real-time information from multiple business systems, so emergency responders can make time-sensitive decisions in critical situations.
  • Demonstrations of mashups
  • ICA awards Jack Dangermond with Mannerfelt Gold Medal. This is ICA's highest honor, first awarded in 1980 to recognize extraordinary merits in cartography including the conception, production, dissemination, and study of maps. Dangermond is only the 11th recipient of the medal.

ArcGIS Explorer

There is plenty of information about AGX on the blog especially about the upcoming release - 600. This release will include a new user interface from Microsoft Office 2007 - the Ribbon. Here is an example.

There are some interesting maps, like this UC Route Finder. This is very handy because the Convention Centre is huge and it is easy to get lost if you are there for the first time.

image

There is also an Attendee Map - if you want to find out how many visitors are coming from a certain city...

For more detailed updates on the conference have a look at the Jithen's blog.

ArcGIS Server Online services to include Microsoft's Virtual Earth

In latest press release ESRI stated that Virtual Earth will be accessible from ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server. Here is what can be expected:

The ArcGIS Online Virtual Earth map services will include high-resolution street maps, imagery, and hybrid maps. Street map coverage is available for more than 60 countries and regions including North America, Europe, South America, the Asia Pacific region, and Northern Africa. Aerial and satellite imagery includes worldwide coverage, but varies by region. ESRI integrates with other Microsoft products that may be part of a user’s Virtual Earth solution to incorporate internal and third-party data—making information more discoverable, more visual, and better to take action upon.

This are examples of the maps you will be able to use as road view, aerials and labels.

image

image

(Skytower is visible in the centre of the map. Just follow the very long shadow to find it.)

image

When will this be available? At later date, through a service pack. So, keep an eye on ESRI's support page for new service pack.

To test drive it head over here.

ArcGIS 9.2 SP 6 released

Latest service pack  - 6 for ArcGIS 9.2 was released three days ago and modified today. The service pack can be downloaded from Downloads on ESRI Support page. Service pack 6 is available for Desktop, Server, Image server and ArcIMS.

Here is a collection of my picks for each of the patches.

ArcGIS Desktop, Engine and Server

There are 97 fixes total for the desktop. Here are interesting ones.

  • NIM005525 - (dup. NIM035014): ArcMap incorrectly renders as transparent all white (RGB value of 255, 255, 255) areas of an ArcGIS Server Map Service. Areas of the map service where this occurs may not be consistent due to two reasons. First, the resampling of the image may slightly change the RGB value of white areas from 255, 255, 255 (which will be transparent) to another value, e.g., 254, 255, 255 (which will not be transparent). Second, a cached map service may respond with an image rendered on the fly instead of an image stored in the cache. The server does this when an image does not exist in the cache or is unavailable. The server creates an image on the fly. The areas in the image that are of RGB value 255, 255, 255, will be transparent. This issue does not affect pre-rendered caches.
  • NIM006017 - Extents for a MrSID file are not read correctly in ArcGIS 9.2 if the .aux contains a polynomial order > 1.
  • NIM006127 - Using Copy Raster fails with JPG 2000 if the output is greater than 4GB.
  • NIM006830 - Definition queries do not work on non-OID tables, including xy event layers.
  • NIM007535 - When applying classify renderer to a raster catalog, user defined class breaks are not retained within a map document.
  • NIM007801 - Cannot specify an output format other than a GRID with the TIN to Raster command.
  • NIM008456 - After adding data from a file geodatabase, the Up one level button crashes the application.
  • NIM009685 - Raster symbology minimum/maximum renderer does not maintain changes to the layer properties.
  • NIM011023 - Deleting or renaming a Cartographic Representation from a feature class causes ArcMap to crash when opening a .mxd.
  • NIM013328 - Application fails when writing rows into a file geodatabase within an edit session.
  • NIM031043 - Histogram colors do not match the Table of Contents colors if the raster has negative values in the Spatial Analyst toolbar.
  • NIM031638 - When used with a file geodatabase, a where clause of the form "current_date - DATE_LEFT > 365" (where DATE_LEFT is a field of date type) should return all dates greater than a year old. Instead, It returns Invalid SQL.
  • NIM032001 - ITable.DeleteSearchedRows does not honor query build with ISpatialFilter if the operation is not enclosed in Start/Stop Editing.
  • NIM032305 - Replica synchronization fails when field types other than long integer are used to define a relationship class included in the replica.
  • NIM032435 - Data Extract failure to file geodatabase when an index references fully qualified field names.
  • NIM032480 - Windows Vista only: Viewing metadata in ArcCatalog and exporting metadata using the Export Metadata dialog box in ArcCatalog fails with Vista SP1.
  • NIM032607 - The standard label engine does not create the correct anchor point for leader lined text for a feature with a representation shape override.
  • NIM032629 - Windows Vista only: Unable to delete more than two fields from a shapefile in the same ArcMap session. The shapefile is locked after the second field is deleted.
  • NIM032838 - Creating and releasing point ArcObjects continuously leaks memory in VisualBeans mode.
  • NIM032916 - There are no DBTUNE storage parameters for raster attribute tables (SDE_VAT_#).
  • NIM033517 - When using Select By Location to process a large dataset, the following error may display: An unexpected error occurred in the Select By Location command.
  • NIM033547 - Some features with very large extents can fail to refresh properly when changes in visibility occur at high zoom levels.
  • NIM033840 - Windows Vista only: Using the ESC key to cancel drawing of large datasets in ArcMap can render the application unresponsive until the drawing is complete.
  • NIM034190 - An Upgrade message still appears in ArcCatalog when connecting from a 9.2 client to a 9.3 geodatabase. When a 9.2 client dismisses the message box, the next time a 9.3 client connects, the geodatabase must be upgraded.
  • NIM034538 - Query expressions become case sensitive on a layer that has joined to a table through an OLEDB connection, returning incorrect results.
  • NIM034665 - When editing z-aware data, the Replace Sketch command does not preserve the z values from the existing feature.
  • NIM034667 - PageLayoutControl crashes when panning without any data added.
  • NIM034748 - Copying data from a file geodatabase crashes ArcMap if an index exists for a field that no longer exists. This could happen if a field with an index was deleted from a table, and the index was not properly removed by ArcGIS.
  • NIM034793 - ArcMap crashes when tracing around a large dataset.
  • NIM034983 - Published maps with multiple data frames do not clip data to the correct extent when packaged.

There are few fixes for Vista only and it is good to see ESRI working and testing it on Vista.

Complete list of fixes is for desktop is available here.

ArcGIS Server for .Net

There are only 8 fixes so here they are:

  • NIM009293 - When TOC.Refresh() is executed, various properties of the Table of Contents control are not maintained.
  • NIM011133 - Toggling a subnode of a GraphicsLayer resource in the Table of Contents control displays the error "An unhandled exception has occurred. The method or operation is not implemented".
  • NIM035117 - When setting up a custom context menu on a TreeViewPlus node, there is no method to call to dismiss the Context menu once it has been brought up.
  • NIM035118 - When setting up a Context menu for a TreeViewPlus node, it is not possible to call SetupContextMenu on a node more than once per session.
  • NIM035119 - If nodes in a TOC are changed programmatically, there is no mechanism to re-apply the changes when the page or the TOC refreshes.
  • NIM035120 - If a custom Context menu is set up for a node in the TOC, right-clicking the node to bring up the context menu does not highlight the node.
  • NIM035645 - The MapresourceManager.ResourceInit event does not fire if GISResourceItem.Initialize is called or if initialization fails.
  • NIM036213 - Resources are initialized more often than necessary if initialized on demand.

 ArcGIS Mobile

Only 3 fixes here:

  • NIM033867 - The ArcGIS Mobile SDK fails to connect and use the GPS receiver within the Symbol MC35 device.
  • NIM034224 - The SpatialReference.MobileToServerSquareDistance method returns the square distance calculation in mobile units (integer units) rather than in the units of the spatial reference of the map. This results in an incorrect area calculation in a polygon feature.
  • NIM034683 - When updating the vertices of complex polygon shapes, coordinates may be improperly ordered in the collection, resulting in invalid geometries that cannot be posted back to the server.

 ArcGIS Server for Java

The one and only one:

  • NIM031066 - When snapping is enabled in the Java ADF Editing task, multiple identical polygon features are occasionally created in the geodatabase.

_______________________________________________________________________

ArcSDE 9.2 SP6

ArcSDE 9.2 SP6 is a separate download with it's own list of issues resolved. This list is relatively short and I have included it here.

ArcSDE administration

  • NIM010594 - Spatial views created by a non-owner using the sdetable -o create_view command are not displayed in ArcGIS if the columns specified using the -c option are qualified with the table name. For example, mytable.myfield.

What's new in ArcGIS 9.3 - Mapping

There are quite a few improvements and new features relevant to mapping and cartography. Here are some of them.

Convert graphics to features

This is something that should have been in ArcMap long time ago. When you want to create some features quickly just create a graphics using tools from Drawing toolbar, give it a name and from data frame context menu or Drawing menu on Draw toolbar select "Convert Graphics to Features".

grph2feat1

grph2feat2

After conversion you can choose to add new layer to TOC. If you do you can quickly check new feature with identify tool - name of the graphic is now an attribute of new feature class.

grph2feat3

Bookmark changes

Bookmark manager has options for Save and Load. This was something that many users wanted but was not easy to do. Now it is a lot easier to share and distribute bookmarks.

bookmakrs

To some of you this may look very similar to My Places dialog. In fact file for saving bookmarks is the same as for My Places (binary *.dat file). My Places has broader scope of use than bookmarks and thy are stored in central place and can be used in numerous map documents. What's new PDF describes how to get bookmarks to My Places and vice versa.

Legend transparency

Yet another frequently requested feature. In previous releases there was a workaround to get this but you had to convert legend to graphics and loose the link to TOC. Now this works much better and legend is still dynamically  linked.

legend_transparent

Pause labeling

This could be a very popular tool. Until now labels had to be turned off in Label Manager for some or all layers. With a single click you can stop all labeling in data or layout view.

These are some the new features. In next post I'll describe new cartographic representation functionality and enhancements.

ArcGIS 9.3 patch for Acrobat 9 PDF

This is a new patch for ArcGIS 9.3 even if 9.3 was just released. The reason for this patch is that Acrobat 9 was released after code freeze for ArcGIS 9.3.

What is in this patch? Some interesting features. In addition to have layers from ArcMap as layers in PDf now we can export attributes to the PDF document. Recommendation is to limit the fields you wish to export in ArcMap by controlling field visibility in layer properties. Attribute export is applicable to Acrobat Reader version 9 only.

Layers in PDF

acrobat9map

Attributes in PDF

acrobat9attrib

Now we can query the XY location of features in PDF document directly. New toolbar "Analysis" and resulting X and Y coordinates are highlighted in red on screenshot below.

reader9XY

If you have Adobe Acrobat 9 you can do more (from ArcGIS 9.3 help):

If that same PDF is opened in any of the pay-for Acrobat products, an extended geospatial toolset is provided, including coordinate readout, find XY, geodesic measurement, and georeferenced markup. This same extended toolset can be accessed in the free Adobe Reader if the PDF has first been resaved in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro or Pro Extended using the "Enable for Commenting and Analysis in Adobe Reader" command.

Unfortunately, I don't have Acrobat 9 so I can't test this.

ArcGIS 9.2 SP6 announced

ArcGIS 9.2 is to get yet another Service Pack. Later this months ESRI will release Service Pack 6. It includes number of fixes - 97 for Desktop, Engine and Server and 66 fixes for development side of things (all databases, all development environments).

More about it when it gets released. If you want to check out the list see it over here.

What's new in ArcGIS 9.3 - General

ArcGIS 9.3 is now shipping and you can expect to get your copy in next month or two. In the meantime I'll put a number of posts describing new features of ArcGIS 9.3.

New license manager

At this release ESRI is shipping a new version of license manager - FLEXNet Publisher 11.4. You will have to use this license manager for 9.3 and you can use it for all 9.X licenses. This license manager now runs on Vista and 64bit versions of Windows. It also fixes problems when accessing license manager via RDP. If you are one of few users using options file, MAX option now works correctly.

NOTE: Previously released license manager update can't be used to serve 9.3 licenses even if it is the same version number.

64bit support

ArcGIS Desktop will run as 32bit application under 64bit windows. ArcReader on 64bit Solaris and Linux will run as 64bit. ArcGIS Server (AGS) and ArcIMS are 32bit applications. Make sure your preferred web server is supported under 64bit windows.

For ArcSDE things are looking better - it is available as 64bit application for Solaris, HPUX, HP Itanium and AIX. For Windows it is just 32bit application under 64bit windows.

Crash handling

When ArcGIS crashes it will now generate a report that can be e-mailed to ESRI for research. You can supply your e-mail address to provide any additional information to ESRI. It would be nice to be able to specify an e-mail address for crash reports. Being international distributor we are handling all support calls for New Zealand it would help us to get these reports. I'll do some research on this topic but for now it does not seems to be customizable.

Resource centres

There are quite few resource centres now available for ArcGIS products/technologies. For accessing them (or at least some) you have to log on using your global account. They may not be up and running perfectly (Desktop is still asking for Release Candidate 1 pass code...)

ArcGIS Desktop: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisdesktop
ArcGIS Engine: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisengine
ArcGIS Server: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisserver
ArcGIS Mobile: http://resources.esri.com/arcgismobile
ArcGIS Image Server: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisimageserver
ArcGIS Explorer: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisexplorer
ArcIMS: http://resources.esri.com/arcims
Geodatabase: http://resources.esri.com/geodatabase

My favourite is Mapping Centre with excellent Blog and 'Ask A Cartographer' section.

ArcGIS 9.3 will support COLLADA models

In a brief news release on main ESRI web site they have announced support for COLLADA models in ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server. There isn't much in the announcement so we'll have to wait and see when software ships later this year.

Adding support for COLLADA is opening a whole range of options for creating 3D content for ArcGIS. There are various tools available for creating models in COLLADA including Blender, SketchUp, Maya, 3D Studio Max and many others.

If you want to find more about it have a look at the forum. This includes specification, conformance test and examples.

ArcGIS 9.2 SP 5 announced

ESRI has announced the release of Service Pack 5 for ArcGIS 9.2 on their support web site page. Service pack will be available latter this month.

The list of issues addressed with this service pack is quite long (148 at the time of writing) and most of the issues resolved are for Desktop, Engine and Server.

Here is my pick of important fixes:

  • NIM004970 - Performing an Identify operation or interacting with the Editor task can cause SOC processes to be abandoned under heavy load
  • NIM005584 - After running the Synchronize geoprocessing tool in ArcCatalog, the SDE connections used by the process are released
  • NIM007342 - Terrain to Raster geoprocessing tool may produce incomplete results when a problem occurs enforcing a breakline
  • NIM007623 - SDE-based terrain dataset can't be previewed by a user with SELECT privilege
  • NIM009652 - The polygon contiguity method (build neighbor list function), when used with the Hot Spot Analysis tool, does not include the target polygon in the list of neighbor features. As a consequence, results from the Hot Spot Analysis tool aren’t accurate
  • NIM010212 - The Multipart To Singlepart tool fails with polygon feature classes containing very thin parts
  • NIM010511 - The translation for a parameter on the Set Representation Control Point By Angle geoprocessing tool is not loading properly
  • NIM011533 - ArcMap crashes after intersecting smoothed polygons
  • NIM011631 - Labels disappear in the upper part of the ArcMap data frame if data is in a geographic coordinate system and the projection of the data frame is set to a projected coordinate system
  • NIM012153 - Microsoft Vista: Allow Copy/Paste of a personal geodatabase with managed rasters to work correctly when a copy of the personal geodatabase already exists in the target location
  • NIM012316 - Enable Zoom to Layer for map server layers of geoprocessing service results in ArcMap and ArcGIS Explorer
  • NIM013010 - Building a map cache from a compressed file gdb feature class can exhaust memory and lead to a crash
  • NIM013171 - ArcMap and ArcCatalog crashes while adding or previewing an ERDAS Imagine 16bit colormap image that contains negative values
  • NIM013180 - Memory leak with SpatialFilter when using a SpatialRelDescription on a search
  • NIM013293 - Where clauses of the form “value = field” can give incorrect results when the field is indexed and on the left side of the join for file geodatabases and shapefiles
  • NIM013326 - Select By Location does not select from multiple layers in ArcGIS 9.2 SP4
  • NIM013487 - Crash occurs when adding a field programmatically, and the data is corrupted
  • NIM013932 - Label halos are lost when exporting a map to PDF format using ArcGIS Server (MapServer)
  • NIM031074 - Delta for circular curve may be stored larger than 180 degrees
  • NIM031116 - Allows copy/paste from Access or SDE with long domain descriptions to work when going to file geodatabase. Personal geodatabase allows a description as long as 255 characters. File geodatabase was limited to 160 characters
  • NIM031210 - A relationship may be broken when synchronizing several generations of changes involving a feature and its related data with a 2-way replica
  • NIM031256 - Cartographic line symbols intermittently do not maintain CMYK color values when exported to EPS format from ArcMap
  • NIM031328 - Point symbol draws a larger size than designated in output when the map contains masking and character marker symbols
  • NIM031354 - Importing a .mxd that has a feature layer containing a large number of filters corrupts the Schematic dataset
  • NIM031372 - Improve memory usage for reading spatial referencing of TIFF format
  • NIM031373 - Auxiliary file (.aux.xml) created for NITF in 9.3 is not readable in 9.2
  • NIM031426 - The UPPER and LOWER SQL functions do not work on the right hand side of a join
  • NIM031451 - Running the Dissolve tool repeatedly causes the operation to slow down and eventually the tool fails with an error

The list of fixes will be updated with ArcSDE issues some time later. I'll add my favourites once it is published.
